Pool Demolition: Two Options and What You Can Expect From the Process

HomeBlogPool Demolition: Two Options and What You Can Expect From the Process

Pool demolition is done in one of two ways: partial or full. Partial removal of an inground pool involves keeping parts of the pool intact and simply filling it in, while a full removal is a more intensive process where the entire pool gets demolished and taken out.

Pool Demolition: Two Options and What You Can Expect From the Process

If you’re looking for pool demolition, here’s an overview of what you can expect from each option:

Partial removal (filling in). Given that this is hands-down the simplest method, it goes without saying it’s the most popular. Not only is it quite a bit less expensive, but it’s also far less labor intensive and disruptive. During this process, our demolition team will first remove the top layer of your pool. We will then punch holes in the bottom to allow for drainage. Once this is done, the pool gets filled in with a mixture of clean soil and rubble. It is then compacted, and the land is graded to allow for landscaping.

An important note about partial removal: In most cases, you cannot build on this land in the future.

Full Removal. A full demolition consists of breaking apart the pool shell, concrete, and all other materials. Once these are removed, the hole gets filled with high-quality topsoil and gravel. Using this method of demolition leaves the land suitable for other building projects in the future.

Some things to keep in mind when considering pool removal are:

  • Most (if not all) municipalities have very strict guidelines for disconnecting utilities and handling drainage. It’s important to research these requirements and be sure your demolition team knows them, too.
  • In keeping with municipal guidelines, you will need a permit to demolish your pool. Be sure to call your city hall for details.
